Saint-Front Cathedral and old Périgueux
A UNESCO World Heritage site along the Compostela routes, Saint-Front Cathedral raises five Byzantine domes above the old town. From the opposite bank of the Isle, its silhouette evokes Venice. All around, the paved alleys, Rue Limogeanne, Rue de la Sagesse and their Renaissance mansions can be explored on foot, ideally arm in arm with someone to comment on them.
Vesunna and the ancient quarter
Périgueux was Vesunna, an important Gallo-Roman city. Vésone Tower still stands 24 metres tall, the remnant of an old temple dedicated to the eponymous goddess. A few steps away, the Vesunna Museum, designed by Jean Nouvel, shelters the remarkable remains of a rich domus. Strolling through this ancient quarter makes an original cultural date, to be closed in one of the guinguettes along the Isle.
La Clautre market and Isle quays
Wednesday and Saturday morning, the Clautre market, at the foot of Saint-Front, spreads stalls of truffles, foie gras, ceps, walnuts and local cheeses. In winter, the fat market joins the truffle market on Place Saint-Louis. The Isle quays offer a shaded walk. On Lyad, Périgueux members share their favourite tables and walks: it is up to you to find someone to taste the next season with.
